Six Poets Short of a Sonnet

We stare at the ceiling for inspiration.

We write in distinctly different voices. We agonize over how to cram ideas into meter, rhyme and various forms in innovative combinations.

We meet. We encourage and critique each other. Some of us don't tell our friends that we belong to a (gasp!) poetry group.

Occasionally, we pluck up our courage to stand up and read words aloud in front of wine-sipping, latte-quaffing audiences who still hold the fervent belief that the unaccompanied spoken word is meaningful and powerful on its own. Riddled with self-doubt and anxiety, we even submit a poem now and then to various journals or contests.

But we can't think of anything that scratches our assorted creative itches quite like exploring the prosaic patterns and melodious metrics of poetry forms. Try it. You might like it.

Our winter reading February 23, 2013 at Elodji's Wine and Tapas Bar, which features a lovely, comfortable space for readings, was well attended and well received. Thanks to Susan Spear for organizing the event. We look forward to returning soon!

SPSS members have read their work on The Poetry Show with Dona Stein, at Litfest, Innisfree, Forza, The D Note and ekphrastic readings at other venues.
